ALOMAR

Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research

The Ozone Lidar Telescope
The ozone lidar system needs to be maintained as time goes by. One of these tasks is an adjustment and cleaning of the lidar telescope. This task is not performed very often since the operation itself would cause an unnecessary decrease in the optical quality of the primary- and secondary mirrors. A three year cycle is not unusual, but this demands that the ALOMAR building with it's laser laboratories, recreation areas and telescope hall is kept as clean as possible at all time.

Below you will see some pictures taken during the last maintenance of the telescope in the spring of 2002. The operation was performed by the ALOMAR staff and our colleagues from the Norwegian Air Research Institute (NILU) in Tromsø.

Primary mirror leveling

Alignment lasers are being fixed to the telescope

The primary mirror covered by watered cleenex's.

Slowly the mirror is uncovered, and the process is repeated with alcohol-soaked cleenex's

Gentle wiping....

Deep concentration !

3 hours later. The finished result !!
